Markets Project Seminar
Market-based incentives for managing salinity and waterlogging
in irrigation areas: The science and the economics.
Irrigation stakeholders, land managers and policy makers are
invited to a 1 day seminar to introduce new advances in science,
economics and policy designed to improve management of salinity
and waterlogging in irrigation areas.
Location: Council Room, Executive Centre, Charles Sturt
University
Date: August 8th 2005 9:00am 4:00pm
Salinity and waterlogging are a well known problem in irrigation
areas across Australia. Research is showing there are significant
adverse consequences for agricultural production, environmental
assets and infrastructure within and downstream of irrigation
regions. Already regulatory approaches, incentives and information
programs have been used to address the problem. At this seminar
leading speakers will present new research, outline recent advances
in policy including market-based instrument (MBIs) approaches,
and outline some new tools that may aid in improving policy and
outcomes in your area.
Opening - Welcome address

Plenary - An overview of the policy problem and past approaches.
- Laurie Arthur, Rice Growers Association
The Science - Interactions between crops and water above and
below the ground

to policy development.
